Boiko Zvetanov was born in 1955 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and then studied at the Bulgarian Music Academy with Professor Hadjiev. Early in 1982 he was taken on as a soloist at the Bulgarian National Opera in Sofia. He continued his studies with Boris Hristov in Rome, Prof. G. Lehmann and Margarita Lilova in Vienna and in Busseto with the reknowned tenor Carlo Bergonzi at the Verdi Academy.
In 1988 he won the first prize in the International Singing Competitions of Bilbao (Spain) and Sofia (Bulgaria). In 2001 he was invited to sing at the closing gala concert of the Bartok and Verdi Miskolc International Opera Festival opposite singers like Cecilia Gasdia, Bruno Pola and the celebrated Hungarian bass Istvan Racz.
He approached from the very start the major Verdian roles, being acclaimed as the Duke in Rigoletto, Radames in Aida, Foresto in Attila and Ricardo in Un Ballo in Maschera.Other roles he has been successful in are Pinkerton (Puccini, Madama Butterfly), Rodolfo (Puccini, La Boheme), Maurizio (Cilea, Adriana Lecouvreur), Edgrado (Donizetti, Lucia Di Lammermoor), Arnoldo (Rossini, Guillaume Tell) and Lenski (Tchaikovski, Evgheni Oneghin).
Mr. Zvetanov is, since 1991, a member of the Zurich Opera House. Here he has excelled also in other heavier roles as Pollione in Bellini's Norma, or Fernando in Donizetti's La Favorita.
The bulgarian tenor has had many guest appeareances in countries like Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Russia.
His voice is robust, very well suited for major dramatic roles, but also has the ability to approach lirico-spinto roles. Boiko Zvetanov is a tenor that has a lot more to give to opera of today.
