Born in Verona, Italy, Giovanni Zenatello later honoured
his native city with the world's largest outdoor opera, the Summer
Festival of the Arena di Verona, first held in 1913, with Zenatello
as managing director and performing himself in Aida. He was by then
an internationally renowned tenor, having sung in all major Italian
theatres, in South and Latin America, in Spain, in London, in Chicago
and Boston, and had assumed the role of Otello, for which he was
considered the heir of Tamagno's mantle. After a career that span
over 30 years, he formed a well-reputed impresario duo with his
artistic and sentimental partner, soprano Maria Gay, and also established
a singing academy in New York. |
