Joaquín Pixán

b. 1950, Peján, Spain

Spanish tenor Joaquín Pixán was born in Peján (Pixán), Cangas de Narcea, Spain, where he won his first singing competition at the age of 13, arranged by The Spanish National Radio in Madrid. At 16 he commenced his classical studies at the Escuela de Arte Drámatico in Madrid, followed by the Escuela Superior de Canto two years later, where he received classes from maestri Pérez-Duria and Aragón, and the professors Lavilla and Zanetti. He is chosen by the La Scala di Milano to take part of the group of 18 pupils admitted annually, out of more than 200 applicants. Shortly after he is awarded the first prize in the Miguel Fleta contest for tenors and granted the Humblot-scholarship by the state of Germany.

He debuted professionally in 1976 in the zarzuela El Caserio by Guridi, with the Compañia Nacional de Teatro de la Zarzuela, and the very same year he participated in the world premiere of Los Vagabundos by Moreno Buendía.

His repertory has in general been confined to zarzuela and local, Asturian music, which his more than a dozen recordings reflect. He also holds prestigious posts at Universities and centers in Spain, teaching vocal technique and the culture and music of Asturias. Mid 80's he recorded a series of TV programs for various European countries for educational purposes.

A beautiful, lyrical voice that never reached the general opera public, Spanish tenor Joaquin Pixan devoted his talent to the local culture of his native Asturias.
